Freedom of Information Act
The Freedom of Information Act 2000 (“the Act”) provides rights of public access to
information held by public authorities.
Under the Act, it is the duty of every public authority to adopt and maintain a publication scheme
which has been approved by the Information Commissioner and to publish information in accordance with the scheme.
Publication schemes facilitate the release of information and play a crucial role in supporting and providing
greater openness and transparency across the public sector.
As of January 2009, there is one approved model scheme which lists information under seven broad
classes. This was adopted in full by Shocklach Parish Council at its meeting on 13 November, 2008.
Each authority is also required to provide a guide to information for the
public, which gives details of what the authority will provide under the scheme.
